Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces: What to Know
If you're considering orthodontic treatment as an adult or for a teenager, Invisalign and traditional metal braces are the two options most people weigh against each other. Both work by applying steady pressure to gradually move teeth into position — the difference is mostly in how that pressure is delivered, and what treatment looks and feels like day to day.
Traditional braces
Metal brackets and wires are bonded to the teeth and adjusted periodically by your orthodontist. They're highly effective for complex cases — significant crowding, bite issues, or tooth rotation — and they don't rely on patient compliance, since they can't be removed. The tradeoff is visibility and some adjustment to eating and cleaning habits.
Invisalign
Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom-fitted aligner trays that are swapped out roughly every one to two weeks as your teeth shift. They're removable for eating and brushing, and far less noticeable day to day. Because they rely on the trays being worn consistently (typically 20-22 hours a day), results depend more on patient discipline. Invisalign tends to work well for mild to moderate alignment issues, though many more complex cases are treatable too — a consultation is the best way to know which category yours falls into.
Questions worth asking at a consultation
- Is my case straightforward or complex, and does that change which option makes more sense?
- What's the expected treatment timeline for each option?
- How will each option affect my daily routine — eating, brushing, sports, or instruments?
There's no universally "better" option — it depends on your bite, your goals, and your lifestyle. A consultation is the fastest way to get a straight answer for your specific case.
